Welcome to The Ojai Day Website

Our next Ojai Day will be held on October 18, 2008 from 10am to 5pm

Downtown Ojai, CA

Ojai, commonly known as “Shangri La” (based on Frank Capra’s Lost Horizon’s film,) is located about 85 miles north of Los Angeles.  The name Ojai comes from the Chumash language and means “The Moon” or “Bird’s Nest.”  It’s a truly spiritual place often categorized with Sedona, Arizona and Santa Fe, New Mexico. A melting pot consisting of performers from the stage and screen, world renown artisans, hippies young and old, transfer students, small town folks and big-city transplants. This land of art galleries, rustic retreats, top rated spas, quaint boutiques and restaurants proudly welcomes locals and out of towners for their many events such as the annual tennis tournament, music, screenwriters and film festivals. But October in Ojai is particularly magical  -- October in Ojai suggests the end of summer and the arrival of Ojai Day.

Ojai Day is a the annual downtown street fair hosted by the Recreation Department but it’s not your ordinary street fair – it’s a cultural explosion bursting with art, food, spiritual incantations, multi-ethnic celebrations and good old fashion fun and games. Ojai Day offers a little something for everyone and tops it off with Ojai’s unique character:

v  Beautiful local original art and jewelry as well as interactive art events www.nimblearts.com/Mandala.html

v  Belly dancing, hoop dancing, historic Chumash and Mexican folk dancing, rock bands and D.J.s

v  Finger licking good food and treats from home-made tamales to sumptuous strawberry desserts

v  Rock climbing, bungee jumping, dunk tanks and henna tats

v  Free hay rides

v  Spinning, Knitting and sculpting hands on demonstrations

v  Health, wellness and spiritual demonstrations

v  Sporting events and big screen action (UCLA vs Notre Dame)

v  Classic cars & motorcycles displays

v  Kid’s parades, games, rides, pumpkin carving, petting zoos and much, much more

v  150 + booths, 3 music stages, and many food booths

“The event was originally conceived in 1917, took a hiatus in the 1920’s and has been back with a vengeance since 1993. It’s grown tremendously and has become one of the most popular events in Ojai,” states Jody James the event’s organizer. “The event itself celebrates life, culture and the arts.

Come experience the Ojai Day festivities the third Saturday in October, 10 am –     5 pm in downtown Ojai. Admission is free and there is plenty of free parking in all the neighboring streets and public parking areas. After all, when Krishnamurti, Beatrice Wood and Larry Hagman have each called it home, Ojai must be an interesting place!
